In Spite of Not Being Able to See Them, Brooklynites Turn Out for Fireworks

Hopeful viewers flocked by the hundreds (thousands?) to the new Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1 for the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display. Police were keeping their eyes open and the food vendors were racking it in.

Pier 1 (along with Empire State Park) was probably the best place to view the fireworks near the Downtown Brooklyn area. But even though you could see the tops of the display from here, the feeling was that they were taking place far away.

It was a beautiful night anyway, as a cool breeze blew in off the water and a picnic atmosphere ensued, in spite of the limited view.

Another popular spot -- not as good as Pier 1 -- was in the Fruit Sitting Area on Columbia Heights. The tops of the larger blasts could be seen from here, but it all seemed so far away and kind of disappointing.

Let's hope the display comes back to all of New York next year, instead of just the west side and New Jersey.
